What is Media Literacy?

The word "literacy" usually describes the ability to read and write. Reading literacy and media literacy have a lot in common. Reading starts with recognizing letters. Pretty soon, readers can identify words -- and, most importantly, understand what those words mean. Readers then become writers. With more experience, readers and writers develop strong literacy skills.

“Media Literacy is a 21st-century approach to education. It provides a framework to access, analyze, evaluate, create and participate with messages in a variety of forms — from print to video to the Internet. Media literacy builds an understanding of the role of media in society as well as essential skills of inquiry and self-expression necessary for citizens of a democracy.”

Why Media Literacy is Important?

Media literacy, put simply, is the ability to identify different types of media and the messages they are sending. When we speak of media, it encompasses print media, such as newspapers, magazines and posters, and theatrical presentations, tweets, radio broadcasts, etc. Being able to understand these various forms of information with an ability to make sense of what is presented is key.

Media literacy helps in:

1. Encouraging critical thinking;
2. Understanding how media content affects culture and society.
3. Identify marketing and communication strategies.
4. Recognition of the purpose of the creator of the media content.
5. Recognition of persuasion techniques.
6. Recognition of poverty, misinformation, manipulation, and loyalty.
7. Create and share your own media content.
8. Participation in the public sphere as an active citizen.
